June 1 this year, it’s the anniversary of the plastic limit order issued by the Ministry of Commerce. CCFA has made a sample survey about its implementation in supermarkets, which shows that the plastic bag usage of foreign and domestic supermarkets drops more than 80% and 60%, respectively. Taking sales volume, market share, distribution and other factors into consideration, we figure out that the plastic bag usage of China’s supermarkets drops 66% in average, namely 40 billion. According to previous estimation, the annual consumption of plastic bags in fast-moving consumer goods industry is 50 billion in 2006 and 60 billion in 2007.
Before the implementation of “Plastic Limit Order”, plastic bag usage of foreign and domestic supermarkets is 3 and 1.4 per CNY100 respectively, which declines to 0.6 and 0.56 now. Supermarket consumers are used to bringing along shopping bags and reusing plastic bags. The awareness of environment is enhanced. The declined usage of plastic bags has no negative effect on the sales of supermarkets. Supermarkets contribute a lot to the environment-friendly initiative.
